The standard keyboard layout is available in operating systems of desktop and mobile devices by default and is commonly used in Ukraine. However, it has a steeper learning curve for English speakers.

A phonetic keyboard layout maps the Ukrainian letters to the English qwerty keyboard, so that the letters either have the same sound or same shape. For example, Ukrainian М is very similar to English M in appearance and sound. Other letters such as Д look less similar, but this letter has the same sound as an English D and Ukrainian X is matched with English X based on their similar shape. Phonetic keyboard layout is mostly popular among Westerners learning Ukrainian.

Installing the Ukrainian KU Homophonic keyboard in Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

The Windows operating system provides a keyboard that will allow you to type in Ukrainian, but this keyboard uses the layout of the Ukrainian typewriter keyboard. While many are able to learn to touch type using this different layout, for most students it is easier to use a remapped keyboard on which there are sound correspondences between the Ukrainian and English letters. These keyboards are known as homophonic (meaning 'sounds the same') keyboards. The KU homophonic keyboard attempts to reflect sound correspondences when possible, and to map other letters and symbols for ease of typing. For the purpose of illustration, the layouts are provided below:
